Gen Z Entrepreneur Brings Dance Studio to Life
Overview
When a vacant church in Jones Creek caught Hannah Holderness’s eye in mid-2024, she didn’t just see pews and stained glass—she saw potential. A place where homeschooled students could find joy through movement, where faith and rhythm could coexist, and where a 14-year-old dream could finally come alive. Just months later, that dream became reality with the launch of Ms. Hannah’s Dance Academy, and it all started with a little help from the Brazosport College Small Business Development Center (SBDC).
Holderness first reached out to the SBDC in February 2024. After years of teaching dance to homeschooled students in co-op spaces, she was ready to open a dedicated studio that reflected her values: positive, supportive, and faith-centered. With over 20 years of dance experience and a growing local following, she knew the timing was right. But she also knew she needed guidance.
Enter Jennifer Finney, Director and Business Advisor of the Brazosport College SBDC. Together, they tackled everything from business plan development and feasibility analysis to marketing strategy and startup financials. Finney directed her to free webinars, industry research, and customizable templates to help her launch with clarity and confidence.
As she searched for the perfect studio location, Holderness carefully evaluated several properties in the Lake Jackson area—weighing cost, renovation needs, and zoning restrictions. After encountering potential challenges with one option, she eventually discovered a better fit: a former church building in Jones Creek. The property offered open space, character, and no zoning complications. By July 2024, she had secured the building and quickly began converting it into her dream studio.
With the guidance of the SBDC, I was able to bring the dream of opening my dance academy to life in just six short months! Jennifer Finney truly took the time to walk me through the best resources for every question I had along the way to give me a clear path forward.

Owner, Ms. Hannah's Dance Academy
Just one month later, Ms. Hannah’s Dance Academy opened for enrollments, and on August 24, 2024, the studio officially opened its doors. In September, she welcomed her first class and a brand-new team of two staff members.
Now serving students from across Bay City, Angleton, Sweeny, Brazoria, and beyond, Ms. Hannah’s Dance Academy is a vibrant hub for movement, mentorship, and community. The Brazosport College SBDC continues to walk alongside Holderness, offering support in areas like accounting, HR, and growth strategy as her studio continues to flourish.
What started as a co-op class has become a legacy in motion, proving that with vision, persistence, and the right support, even the boldest dreams can take center stage.
